Eroding Alcatraz

Family was in town, and so for the first time in my 10+ years of living in the Bay Area I chartered a boat to take us to the classic prison.

Now I love me some photographic texture… (If you didn’t know this about me before, just a few eventual clicks through the site will get you up to speed.) …and this island is teeming with amazing textures. Practically everywhere you look, nature is fighting the long, hard battle to reclaim as much of the man-made objects as it can. Which come to find out, is actually one of the reasons the jail was closed in the first place—upkeep was just too expensive.

I commend the National Park Service for doing such a good job of presenting the entire tour. When we visited, it was run like clockwork and included a fascinating audio tour through the jail as well as videos and short history lessons on the island itself. Which bodes well for us locals, since this is a destination that everyone wants to see when visiting our fair city!
